Boiler Plus New Regulations
Everyone should have access to a decent home that is affordable to run, comfortable to live in, and sustainable for the future. Installing an energy efficient boiler can save some households hundreds of pounds a year, while effective use of controls can enable consumers to remain safe and comfortable, while minimising energy consumption.
April 2018 new regulations regarding all new boiler instillations will come into force in England (UK), we are going to take a look how this will effect your new heating system and what you need to do to comply.
What Is Boiler Plus
It’s a new addition to Part L of the building regulations introduced by the department of business, energy and industrial strategy, (This will be Law) it lists out new rules for the fitting of new boilers and controls to help with reduction of domestic carbon emissions.
In brief, Boilers must be a minimum of 92 %, Boilers must have an interlock and one of the following.
Flue Gas Recovery System
To comply with the law your heating engineer will be offering the the choice of one of the above and unfortunately this will put a slight increase in the overall cost. Over time this cost will be paid back to you through the savings made in energy.
Smarts Controls payback 11 Years. Approximate cost £200
Weather Compensation payback 35 Years. Approximate cost £145
Load Compensation payback 13 Years. Approximate cost £50
Flue Gas Heat Recovery payback 13 Years Approximate coast £500
Let’s take a look at the options in more detail.
Flue Gas Heat Recovery
Let’s start with the most expensive, Flue gas heat recovery system, this is a heat exchanger that fits on top of your boiler and absorbs any remaining heat with in your flue gas, the cold water inlet passes through this saving you
energy, the insulation cost is high and the pay back is long, the only one benefit to the installer is there simple to fit with no extra elecrics’s.
This device measure the outside temperature by means of a sensor, this temperature information then adjusts the inside temperature of the property, if the outside temperature is low the boiler will raise the inside temperature accordingly and when warm outside will turn your heating off, it’s all automatic and is designed to keep the fabrication of your property warm and your boiler runs at a lower temperature which is more efficient and also doesn’t put your boiler under any high load. When linked to smart controls this system can learn how long it takes for your property to heat up working out the heat loss using algorithms. You should find your property will never be cold and at the correct temperature saving you cash. Payback is long but insulation cost quite low.
This lowers the water temperature in your radiators when the house is warm and opposite gets the water hotter when needed rather than your water being red hot or cold, you will find this built into more boilers as time goes on and also integrated into manufactures controls using open therm, this is probably your cheapest option because you can get it built into the boiler and using the manufactures time control clock could be a choice.
Smart thermostats are very popular and there is a large choice to chose from, they all basically perform the same job some just have more features, I’m not going into brands but some of the features are, the stat will work out how long it takes to heat your home up to your ideal temperature and turns the heating on at the correct time and also can detect if there’s anyone in the property and turn the heating on and off accordingly, they can also detect the outside temperature via the internet and heat your home again accordingly, these stats can also be controlled via your smart phone, for example your on your way home and you want to turn the heating up before your get in, well you can sort than on your phone (how cool is that). The pay back is still long, the installation cost is reasonable.
Have a chat with your local heating engineer and get more advice, most boiler manufactures will supply matching controls which can make insulation easier and quicker and because it’s all the same brand will be easier to set up and with long boiler warranties these days you should be covered for up to 10 Years as long as you have it serviced every year.
