Update Your Kitchen On A Budget
Kitchen Re Model
Kitchens is one of the largest out lays in you property or can be but there are ways to keep the cost down, you don’t always need to go the whole hog, for example changing the doors can transform it, swapping the worktops looks like you’ve had a new kitchen, you can even paint your existing doors.
Your thinking about changing the lot and i mean the lot, before you do anything same as the bathroom get a plan together, have a look round the showrooms and decide what door style you fancy, this is where most of the cost comes from, so kitchen door range from solid wood E.G oak or MDF finished in laminate, veneer or just painted, now this all depends on your budget and the look your after shaker style like the one i fitted in the picture is very popular and doesn’t seem to date and will look good in 10 years time (if you look after it) the main problem with MDF doors and this is my opinion as i’ve seen it happen dozens of times the laminate can start to lift of the mdf over time, the cause is boiling your kettle under the same door for long periods or the steam from your veg steamer, so the answer move your steam producing appliances around the kitchen from time to time and pull them forward when using them.
Will last longer but will they date quicker ? are they worth the extra cash ? i have fitted many off both and the finish is good, I suppose an 200 year old period farm house is going to need a different look to a modern detached house. if you have very deep pockets then go the whole hog theres also plenty of automation to be had, Plinth vacuums, automatic rise and fall sockets, extractors that suck downward, induction hobs, automatic opening doors, instant boiling water taps.
In this modern world we spend most of our lives in the kitchen diner so why not go to town and impress your friends with a gadget or two. So what do we need to spend, well depend on your budget but regardless what you have to spend there is an option for you, first of all make sure your kitchen is functional, do you actually cook in there ? The DIY kitchen re model is definitely an option, first of all clear out all the clutter empty the worktops and throw out the out of date tins of beans, give the kitchen a good scrub and stand back see what you now have, are those counter tops solid wood great if they are, they can be sanded back and re stained for little cost, need new tops don’t go for granite choose laminate they are hard waring easy to fit and will last for years.
Always try and stick to your current layout as moving stuff around cost money, the same goes for your appliances, if there working don’t fix them, new appliances are expensive. if there safe to use give them a good scrub and keep them.
What else can we do ? ok lets talk about splash backs you know that bit of wall behind your counter top. changing the tiles is an option as is painting them your local DIY store will stock a whole range of tile paints and its very easy and cheap to do and will transform your kitchen, if your fee
ling a bit more hands on replace them, did you know the best surface to tile onto is yes you’ve guessed tiles hell yes you can just tile straight over your existing tiles no problem. just de grease your old tiles first and away you go.
LED is the way to go, under cabinet lighting will bring a warm feel to your kitchen and wont cost the earth to run, your going to need an electrician to carry out your lighting work so lets plan the lighting work, i would go with under cabinet lighting and definitely LED and ceiling lighting does depend on what space you have but LED spot lights do look good and give off great all round brightness. The LED world has gone mad as of late and the kitchen area is no exception, its free to pop down your local kitchen showroom and get some inspiration, new show homes are another good way to see how the top designers do there kitchens.
Flooring can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it for example have you got floor boards ? if yes you’ve won the jackpot, use a nail punch and knock the nail heads down into the boards sand them and stain or paint to your desired colour easy and cheap, if not its not the end of the world, laminate floor, cushion floor(Vinyl) look fantastic when down and will last years, other options will be expensive, ceramics, you can purchase them quite cheaply in sales but the fitting can work out expensive but once down can last a lifetime.
It goes without saying were all capable of painting walls and this will certainly give your kitchen a whole new look and for very little money, in fact you’ve probably got old pots of paint knocking about in the shed, the good thing with paint and your kitchen is change, its easy and cheap to change the colour regularly if you wish to give your kitchen a new lease of life, don’t think for one second that you have to use kitchen paint, oh no any emulsion will cut the mustard so get the brushes out, better still invite a few friends over and get a painting part on the go. Happy Days………….
