How To Control Rats
How To Control Rats At Home
Rats are found in nearly all areas of Earth, which are inhabited by human beings. The only rat-free continent is Antarctica, which is too cold for rats survival outdoors, and its lack of human habitation does not provide buildings to shelter them from the weather. I know rats are everywhere, more so where food can be found but I’m concentrating on rats found around your home and garden. Oh by the way I am not an expert on rats this is just my nightmarish experience I have had and how I control them.
Rats Rats Rats
They say you are always within a few feet of a rat and that’s not a comforting thought for some especially me who is scared stiff of them, so before we rant on how we all hate the site of them lets chat some about why I am getting into this subject.
This subject has been covered a thousand times I know but I need to get this off my chest and maybe help you on the way, I have had rats in my garden on and off for a few years and I have been on a mission to get rid of them, I have now concluded that its probably impossible to completely get rid, why? Because there’s too many of them simple
Do You Have A Rat Problem
Look for holes in the ground! The size of a golf ball up to tennis ball size, Hell yes they can dig, burrow, climb, scratch, jump, swim and probably fart not that I have been that close to one, wooden decking is another good spot for rats to hang out! Guess what, I have decking by my pond as well.
The black and brown rat is the most common here in the UK, looking at the history world wide as well, they tend to be more active during the night where they can have the garden to them selves with out the risk of disturbance but when they are hungry they will go hunting in daylight.
I remember years ago we had a couple of rats in my loft it took me a while, I found a tennis ball size hole next to the house the crafty shit was climbing up the cavity and what was funny (not so funny at the time) we stored Christmas chocolate bars up there, they were taking the chocolate bars back to there home to feed the kids, anyway I had a panic attack and called in the rat catcher who eventually got rid of them at great cost.
What To Do Next
So you have rats around your home, first thing first get rid of any food source, make sure your dust bin lids fit correctly and they haven’t chewed a hole in the bottom, stop feeding the birds from the ground buy a bird table if you must and that goes for your neighbour as well, I cant comment on dealing with neighbours but this does need to be a team effort.
A garden pond like mine above can attract Rats, remember they can swim, I have seen them swimming after fish food and drinking, you cant stop them drinking but just feed your fish enough so no excess is left on the surface.
To Kill Or Not To Kill
This subject is difficult as there are folk out there that wont kill rats if your one of them your job is going to be a mammoth task.
Yes you can just live with them or use humane traps and take them for a drive an let them go so they can disrupt other peoples gardens This will be an on going mission and you take the risk of contaminating yourself with disease, Or you can poison them yes that means to kill, this is relatively easy and cheap, your local DIY store will sell rat poison boxes and the correct poison for you to use.
Open the box place the poison inside and place your box close to where you have seen rat action, they normally run along fences (not the top) having said that I was going the washing up and one trotted over the middle of my lawn stopped looked at me (and I am sure it winked) and carried on this was in the middle of the day (my language was not the best)
Lay out your boxes I would get 2 or 3 and in a weeks time open up the boxes and re bait them and keep doing this every week until they stop taking the poison, this is then a good indication you have them under control but don’t do what I first did and remove the boxes because 2 months later the rats had moved back in, keep the boxes in place and check the poison every month, this has kept mine under control.
Remember all this is just to keep them under control in your garden and if your neighbor’s gardens are full of rotting food or they have chickens your going to have a battle on your hands, remember any livestock in gardens equals food on the ground, food on the ground equals rats and until you get rid of the food the rats will be back…..
